Welcome

Mission Statement:

The purpose of this learning module is to gather, analyze, and comment upon documents and events relating to the landmark Supreme Court case, Plessy v. Ferguson, and the Jim Crow era that created it.

Louisiana is of special interest here since the case began in New Orleans and because of the State's unpleasant racial history. Current incidents of possible discrimination will be discussed.

“In my opinion, the judgment this day rendered will, in time, prove to be quite as pernicious as the decision made by this tribunal in the Dred Scott Case.”

Justice John Marshall Brown, dissenting opinion in Plessy v. Ferguson.
