The Scopes Trial: Majority Rule vs. Minority Rights

Darrow's Argument

On the second to last day of the trial, Darrow called Bryan to the stand.  It was at this point that the arguments presented in the trial took a dramatic shift and became the vivid and spectacular religion vs. science debate that most people associate with the Scopes trial.  Darrow questioned Bryan about the literal interpretation of the Bible and asked him to reconcile that view with evidence dating Ancient Chinese civilizations back more than six-thousand years.  Throughout this line of question, Darrow made Bryan out to be an ignorant fundamentalist.  The next morning the judge called an end to the trial and told the jury to return a verdict of Guilty or Not Guilty.
